0x00000024 error - how to boot from cd-rom

Sep 2, 2007 7:24AM PDT

while zipping up rarely used file per recommendation from my laptop, I ran into the blue screen of death. It said that the files required by windows to operate properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. No wit doesnt boot up in safe mode also!
I got the win xp re-installation cd and am tryin to boot up using that but am not able to -

1. Is the ms win xp reinstallation cd the right cd that I should be booting the system from? Is this what is being referred to as 'boot up' cd in teh forms(sorry am not that technical)
2. I remeber that there is a shortcut key to indicate to the laptop to boot from cd-rom? which key would that be in dell inspiron 1505?

I am totally stuck and dont know what to do so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Change the BIOS to boot from the CD

You didn't say why you are unable to boot from the CD, so I assume it is because the BIOS does not recognize the CD ROM as a boot device.

When you turn on the computer, press the Del key, (it may be different on your system), to enter the BIOS. In the BIOS change the sequence of bootable devices to set the CD ROM as the first.

Then insert the CD, reboot and see if that works.

next steps? How to save data
Sep 3, 2007 3:34AM PDT

Thanks for the pointer. I was able to boot from the CD and logged on to recovery console. I ran CHKDSK and it gave me some errors for c drive; however I can see my documents have been saved. Now how can I save them off to an auxillary drive?
I dont know how to fix the computer so I was thinking the only way is to copy the documents elsewhere and reformat my laptop.

I tried connecting external HD thru USB to my comp however when I type in the drive name 'I,J,K or L:' it says drive not found. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is the laptop working now or not?
Sep 3, 2007 5:38AM PDT

I'm confused. Did CHKDSK fix those errors, and if so, is the laptop able to boot into XP now, either full XP or Safe Mode?

If not why not?

Try a repair install from the XP CD. It won't overwrite your documents. Guidance here;

Mark...CHKDSK -r option did the trick. Now the laptop is able to boot into full XP. I did it thru recovery console.

quick question though - when I ran chkdsk it stated some corruption in C: but then after running chkdsk -r it booted fine....will there still be any corrupt sectors left? Is it recommended that I reformat my comp?

Thanks!

Probably ok for now.

I'm glad you got it sorted.

CHKDSK will have fixed the bad sectors, either by sorting them out or bypassing them. Unless there was a large number of bad sectors it should be ok. You will always get some bad sectors on a hard disk and the disk will work fine. If the Operating System is working ok now you should be good for a while.

However, it would be a good idea to back up your important, cannot lose, documents, settings, photos, music etc, just in case.

You said you had tried to connecting an external thru a USB but when you typed in a drive letter you got a not found message. I'm not sure what you are doing there because a properly formatted and partitioned external drive should just be recognized by the "New hardware found" utility when you connect it to a USB port.

Have you formatted this external drive properly through the Disk Management console? There's more on that at TheElderGeek's site here;
http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_management.htm

I hope that helps.
