0s 8.6 tcp query

Aug 15, 2005 9:24AM PDT

Hi,
i have been given a mac with os 8.6 (i know it is old) and i wish to set it up so parents can surf the internet.
I am finding it difficult...maybe because i cannot see the option for ppp in connect via box in tcp/ip wondow.
How can i get this option placed in tcp/ip

The system has an external modem (dynalink).

cheers

Connect via

It should be there if all the software for the modem is installed. What options do you see in the TCP/IP window?

Hi,
thanx for replying,

the two options in connect via window are
ethernet
and (i think from memory)
appletalk.

i have the original os disk
i also have a disk with the script for the external modem type to show up when selecting modem in the Modem window.

PPP

Check the extensions manager and look for 9 Open Transport files.
If they are not there, you may have to reinstall them using a Custom install from the CD's
Check also for a file called PPP or FreePPP. It might NOT be present. If it is, make sure it is in the extensions folder and restart.

Good hunting

freeppp but..
Aug 15, 2005 8:20PM PDT

Hi,
Have installed freeppp, but when i go
control panel==modem

i get a statement saying
connect via - no serial port available

the actual external modem is attached well and the phone cable is also attached....is there any way i can see if the port is assigned to something else or does it need some sort of tweak?

thankz in advance for tolerating what seems such easy
task!

cheers

Now we need to know exactly what sort of mac you have.
The modem is normally attached to the serial port marked with a Phone. However, on some Macs there was only one serial port and it was marked with a printer.
Is there any other modem installed inside the machine?
Some Macs came with pre-installed modems.
There is really no way to see what is attached to the serial ports. Try having everything connected, and switched on, and restarting the Mac.
Still need the details.
