Sansa Stark is now Jean Grey: "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner is one of three young actors cast as lead characters Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm in the forthcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse".
Directed by Brian Singer, "Apocalypse" is the next installment in the series of movies based on the superpowered mutants from Marvel comics. Previous movies have featured older versions of Jean, Cyclops and Storm, but the new sort-of-prequel sees Turner, Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp playing the characters when they were younger.
Turner is the younger Jean Grey, played in previous movies by Famke Janssen. Alexandra Shipp will play weather-controlling mutant Storm, taking over from Halle Berry. Shipp is best known for her work in shows including "Ray Donovan" and "House of Anubis". Last year she portrayed the late pop star Aaliyah in a biopic, and will soon be seen in another musical true story, "Straight Outta Compton", about rappers NWA.
Sheridan, previously seen in "Tree of Life" and "Mud", plays Cyclops, a mutant with laser eyes who was played in earlier movies as an older man by James Marsden.
There are currently two generations of actors playing the X-Men at different points in their lives. Adult versions of the mutant superteam were first seen in Singer's present day-set "X-Men" in 2000, before younger models turned up in 1960s-set prequel "X-Men: First Class". Both generations then appeared in the most recent movie "Days of Future Past" thanks to the magic of time travel. Next up, "Apocalypse" is set in the 1980s and continues the story of the younger characters.
Sadly, that means Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will not appear as the older versions of mutant leaders Professor X and Magneto; instead, we'll just follow their younger selves as played by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.
The villain of the new film is the titular Apocalypse, played by Oscar Isaac. Isaac is set for a big year between this month's robotic love triangle "Ex Machina" and little sci-fi flick "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens", coming in December.
"X-Men: Apocalypse" lands in theatres on 27 May 2016.
