Week ahead: Money talks

Tech earning announcements enter a second week of heavy activity.

Following are some of the notable technology-related events scheduled for the week of July 25. Take a deep breath: The next wave of earnings is set to coming barreling in.

The lineup of tech companies set to report quarterly results includes Sony, Macromedia, Time Warner, Akamai Technologies, among numerous others.

In other financial news, Microsoft is scheduled to meet in Redmond, Wash., on Thursday with analysts. Although the company already spilled the beans on its plans for a big stock buyback and dividend, investors will be eager to hear about the company's growth plans and how well its various emerging businesses are doing.

Meanwhile, Microsoft and the European Commission officials will meet on Tuesday with the president of the European Union's Court of First Instance. Judge Bo Vesterdorf will consider Microsoft's request to suspend the sanctions the European Commission imposed on the company for alleged abuse of its market dominance.

On the conference circuit, the Open Source Convention starts Monday in Portland, Ore. Lotus co-founder Mitch Kapor is expected to reveal his plans for the Chandler personal information manager software at the show. Linux kernel programmer Robert Love is scheduled to be there to discuss Project Utopia, an effort to make it easier for Linux computers to respond to such tasks as plugging in a digital camera.

Another conference of note, the Jupiter Plug-in Conference and Expo, is set for New York on Monday. It's aimed at online music industry people, so record labels, artists, and executives from marketing and promotions departments should meet to discuss the business of music. Apple Computer's Eddy Cue, vice president of applications, will be among the keynote speakers.

Tuesday, July 27

  • Akamai Technologies is an Internet backbone company. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 7 cents a share.

  • Silicon Graphics makes high-end computers. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 1 cent per share.

  • Verizon Communications offers wireless services. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 60 cents a share.

  • Ask Jeeves is an Internet search company. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 22 cents a share.

  • Macromedia develops Web design software. It's expected to report a first-quarter profit of 20 cents a share.

  • Openwave Systems is a provider of open standards software products and services for the communications industry. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 4 cents a share.

  • Sony is a consumer electronics giant and computer maker. It's expected to report a first-quarter profit of 36 cents a share.

  • Time Warner is an entertainment and media giant. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 15 cents a share.

  • Adaptec makes direct attached and networked storage products. It's expected to report a first-quarter profit of 4 cents a share.

  • KLA-Tencor develops technology that aids production for integrated circuit manufacturers. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 45 cents a share.
