Week ahead: Earnings explosion

AOL Time Warner, Gateway, Verizon Communications, Electronic Arts and others serve up their quarterly results. And in New York, the Digital Video Show brings out the luminaries.

Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of Jan. 26.

A barrelful of quarterly results is on tap this week, including those of AOL Time Warner. The company is expected to take a "substantial" noncash charge in the quarter to reflect a decline in the value of its online unit, America Online.

Also stepping up to the earnings plate will be computer maker Gateway, which earlier this month issued a fourth-quarter .

    • Vitesse Semiconductor makes chips for the communications industry. It's expected to report a first-quarter loss of 6 cents a share.

    Tuesday, Jan. 28

    • Akamai Technologies offers technology to speed network traffic. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 25 cents a share.

  • Borland Software makes Java development tools. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 9 cents a share.
  • Novellus Systems makes semiconductor equipment. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 10 cents a share.
  • Quantum makes equipment to back up tape drives. It's expected to report a third-quarter loss of 4 cents a share.
  • RealNetworks is a digital media company. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 2 cents a share.
  • Veritas Software makes storage software. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 14 cents a share.

    • AOL Time Warner is a media company. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 26 cents a share.

  • Digital River provides e-commerce systems and an outsourcing service. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 14 cents a share.
  • Electronic Arts is a video game maker. It's expected to report a third-quarter profit of $1.57 a share.
  • Gateway is a computer maker. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 18 cents a share.
  • Verizon Communications is a telecommunications company. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 79 cents a share.

    • Commerce One provides e-business software. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 99 cents a share.

    • Home sales tracks housing activity. December sales of existing homes are expected to rise to 5.61 million, from 5.56 million the previous month. New-home sales are expected to dip to 1.03 million, from nearly 1.07 million the previous month.

    • Durable goods measures the value of all goods shipped or ordered with an intended lifespan of three years or more. The total is expected to grow 0.7 percent in December, after a 1.5 percent decline the previous month.

  • Consumer confidence tracks the results of a broad survey on consumer spending expectations. The January index is expected to fall to 79, from 80.3 the previous month.
  • Thursday, Jan. 30

    • Gross domestic product is the broadest measure of overall U.S. economic activity. Fourth-quarter growth is expected to fall to 1 percent, compared with 4 percent in the previous period.

  • Initial claims is the weekly total of new claims filed for unemployment compensation. The total is expected to rise to 385,000 for the week ended Jan. 25, from 381,000 the previous week. Friday, Jan. 31
    • Personal income measures income from all sources. December growth is expected to dip to 0.2 percent, from 0.3 percent the previous month.
