Week ahead: Earnings explosion
AOL Time Warner, Gateway, Verizon Communications, Electronic Arts and others serve up their quarterly results. And in New York, the Digital Video Show brings out the luminaries.
A barrelful of quarterly results is on tap this week, including those of AOL Time Warner. The company is expected to take a "substantial" noncash charge in the quarter to reflect a decline in the value of its online unit, America Online.
Also stepping up to the earnings plate will be computer maker Gateway, which earlier this month issued a fourth-quarter

- Akamai Technologies offers technology to speed network traffic. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 25 cents a share.

- AOL Time Warner is a media company. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 26 cents a share.
Thursday, Jan. 30
- Commerce One provides e-business software. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 99 cents a share.

- Home sales tracks housing activity. December sales of existing homes are expected to rise to 5.61 million, from 5.56 million the previous month. New-home sales are expected to dip to 1.03 million, from nearly 1.07 million the previous month.
Tuesday, Jan. 28
- Durable goods measures the value of all goods shipped or ordered with an intended lifespan of three years or more. The total is expected to grow 0.7 percent in December, after a 1.5 percent decline the previous month.
Thursday, Jan. 30
- Gross domestic product is the broadest measure of overall U.S. economic activity. Fourth-quarter growth is expected to fall to 1 percent, compared with 4 percent in the previous period.
- Personal income measures income from all sources. December growth is expected to dip to 0.2 percent, from 0.3 percent the previous month.
