Virtual reality gets jolt with YouTube app, free Google Cardboard

Get ready for VR to be a hot topic as more than 1 million New York Times subscribers get Google Cardboard. Also: YouTube's Android app now supports VR video, and Samsung Gear VR prepares to land next month.

It's time to have an honest talk about virtual reality.

Many people will be trying virtual reality on their smartphones for the first time this weekend, as the New York Times includes Google Cardboard with the paper. YouTube also just updated its Android app to support VR videos. The technology around VR may still be a bit young, but Cardboard is giving people a peak at what's possible. Samsung will be launching its 2015 Gear VR headset next month, while Oculus and Sony prepare for bigger launches in 2016:
