Video game rentals the first week of January were up more than one-third over the same period a year ago, according to a report from retailer trade group Video Software Dealers Association. Game rentals for the week ending Jan. 6 totaled $22.6 million, according to the group, compared with $16.6 million last year. The new, highly touted game consoles from Nintendo and Microsoft could take little of the credit for the surge. The top 5 games were all for Sony's PlayStation 2 console, including the controversial "Grand Theft Auto 3," ranked No. 1 for the period. Game rentals are usually dominated by established systems, meaning it's likely to be some time before Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube crack the top of the charts.
