Trunkster: A brainy suitcase with zero zippers

If luggage was featured in "Blade Runner," it would probably look like the Trunkster, a zipperless suitcase with a sliding door.

Take a Trunkster when you travel. Trunkster

There's a popular question floating around the crowdfunding world right now: What does the luggage of the future look and act like? The Bluesmart believes it looks like a GPS-enabled trackable carry-on. The Fugu is pretty sure it comes in the form of a suitcase that expands from a carry-on to a check-in bag. Yet another answer has arrived on Kickstarter in the form of Trunkster, luggage that dumps the zippers and instead uses a sliding door for access.

Another thing those three luggage Kickstarters have in common is that they've all handily topped their funding goals. Bluesmart blasted off to over $1 million. Fugu is creeping up on $200,000. Trunkster, with 56 days left to rumble, has topped $132,000, easily breezing past its $50,000 goal. So we've established that crowdfunding fans are desperate for high-tech luggage.

The most obvious feature that separates Trunkster from the crowd is the fancy sliding door, like a mini version of the kind of doors you see on rolltop desks or some types of rental storage spaces. It will be an attractive design point for anyone who ever cursed a suitcase with a stuck zipper.

Beyond the door, Trunkster also comes with some handy tech features under the hood. There's a built-in digital scale so you can try to avoid overweight luggage fees. Like the Bluesmart, Trunkster has GPS, though you'll need to pay an extra $40 fee to get it. It's probably worth it if you have any fear at all of ending up in a lost-luggage nightmare situation.

A carry-on Trunkster is going for a $295 (about £188, AU$342) pledge, though some early-bird discounts are still available. The check-in size is $335 (about £213, AU$388).

All these clever new luggage designs riding crowdfunding into the market should add some variety to what you typically see rolling around on little wheels at the airport. The popularity of the campaigns just goes to show that the old-fashioned suitcases and soft rolling bags of the past aren't cutting it anymore for tech-savvy travelers.

Zippers? We don't need no stinkin' zippers. Trunkster
