The .GIFYs recognize incredible time-wasting GIFs

The first-ever awards for animated GIFs are live and accepting votes on the most memorable GIFs featuring cats, celebrities, cats, sports stars, cats, goofy dancing, and cats, just for starters.

You may remember the meme created by this nominee for GIF of the year.

While there's no award just yet for outstanding achievement in the field of procrastination, The .GIFYs may just be the closest thing.

Sponsored by advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, The .GIFYs call themselves "the first ever awards honoring the animated GIF as a medium, social commentary and art form" with nominations in categories including sports, news and politics, WTF, and of course the venerable "cats" genre.

Five or six GIFs were nominated in each of 12 categories, including "GIF of the Year," by a panel of 15 of the Internet's greatest enablers of procrastination from sites like Buzzfeed, Tumblr, and GIFPop. In addition to plenty of cats, Oprah, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and Kanye West are among the celebrities who make appearances in the nominated GIFs.

Even with all that star power, some of the most meme-orable performances in the nominee GIFs tend to come from animals, like the carp getting revenge on the fisherman above.

Voting in the GIFYs is open to the public for a few more days. The winners will be announced online and at a ceremony in Los Angeles on January 31. You can vote for your favorite cat GIF here.
