The same group of hackers that exposed a flaw in the iPhone's mobile Safari browser last week just re-released an update to their popular ultrasn0w client that lets users jailbreak their iPhone 4 to use with any carrier regardless of contract.
There's plenty of reasons to jailbreak your iPhone, like using it as a Wi-Fi hotspot, chatting on FaceTime over 3G, making a phone call without the "help" of AT&T, and downloading apps not approved by Apple store, but before you break out of iJail, consider the stated fact that jailbreaking your iPhone will void the warranty.
On the other hand, we hear that the third-party warranty service SquareTrade DOES cover jailbroken iPhones, as long as you perform a complete system restore prior to sending it in for replacement, so you can go that route as well. Or you can just pull a Wilson and use your girlfriend's iPhone 4 as a guinea pig.
