Tax programs lead software sales

Playtime is over, at least in the retail software market, as tax programs eclipse top-selling game titles based on "The Sims" and Harry Potter franchises. The top three software programs for the week of Dec. 30 to Jan. 5 were all tax programs, according to market researcher NPD Intelect. The deluxe and regular versions of Intuit's TurboTax were No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, while the deluxe and regular versions of H&R Block's Taxcut came in third and seventh place on NPD's Top 10 software list. "The Sims" was still hot, however, with the original game and add-on packages claiming four spots on NPD's separate list of the Top 10 PC games.
