The US Postal Service wants your letters and packages to boldly go to addresses where others have certainly gone before, but definitely not with the on-point new Star Trek 50th anniversary forever stamps that go on sale next week.

The postal service unveiled the stamps several months ago, and the long wait for Trekker philatelists -- a subgroup that surely belongs in the nerd hall of fame -- is finally almost over.

The new stamps feature classic imagery from the franchise, including silhouettes of starships, the Starfleet insignia, a crew member "beaming up" and that familiar Vulcan hand signal.

A first-day-of-issue ceremony for the new stamps is set for September 2 in New York at the "Star Trek: Mission New York" conference, where Walter Koenig, the original Checkov, will be on hand for the dedication.

The original Star Trek television program premiered on CBS, CNET's parent company, on September 8, 1966. The commemoration and these stamps will certainly be something to write home about using snail mail for once.
