When it comes to the ultimate science fiction franchise, who does it better? WatchMojo -- a site that puts together pop culture videos -- released a video Sunday that it hopes decides the long-running debate over whether "Star Wars" or "Star Trek" has the best sci-fi universe.
The WatchMojo team came up with five categories -- starships; scope of universe; sci-fi themes; special effects; and heroes and villains -- and made a judgment call determining whether "Star Wars" or "Star Trek" triumphed in each category.
When "Star Wars" came out in 1977, for example, it really set the bar for special effects in film, WatchMojo argues. Further, they state "Star Wars" was instrumental in setting the state for the special effects to come, so "Star Wars" won the special-effects category.
With its core mission to boldly go where no man has gone before, "Star Trek" and the members of the USS Enterprise have encountered a slew of alien races and planets. The WatchMojo team determined that "Star Trek" has more thoroughly explored these alien species and planets than "Star Wars" has, and therefore "Star Trek" has a much broader scope of universe than "Star Wars."
The video really goes to show how amazingly good both "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" truly are, but as there are five categories, one sci-fi universe had to come out ahead. You can see which franchise won out by watching the video above. Do you agree with WatchMojo's assessment? Tells us why or why not in the comments below.
And be sure to watch my CNET colleagues Rich Trenholm and Luke Westaway talk the touchy topic out in the video below.
Regardless of whether you're a "Star Wars" or "Star Trek" fan, you have a lot to look forward to over the next few years. " Star Wars: The Force Awakens" lands in theaters in the US, UK and Australia in December, while "Star Trek Beyond" premieres in July 2016.
