Road Trip pic of the day, 7/17: What and where?

What is this attractive mechanism, and where is it located? If you're the first to send me the correct answers, you'll win a prize in the Road Trip 2009 Picture of the Day challenge.

Somewhere along the route of Road Trip 2009, CNET News reporter Daniel Terdiman passed this industrial machine. Do you know what it is, and where it is located? Tell me and you could win a prize.

Update (July 19, 9:44 p.m.): I forgot to update this challenge with the correct answer, which is the Old Lexington Stamp Mill and Gardens in Butte, Montana.

WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont.--Once upon a time, this machine and many like it were crucial to the town where it rests. And where is that?

I'd tell you, but that would ruin today's Road Trip 2009 Picture of the Day challenge. In fact, your task is to figure out precisely what this is called, and where it's located. And if you're the first person to send me the correct responses (email daniel--dot--terdiman--at--cnet--dot--com), I have a nice prize for you.

One thing's for sure, it's not in West Yellowstone. And that's one clue I'll give you. I've given up trying to stump you, as no matter how obscure I've thought the picture of the day is, someone amongst you has solved it in less than an hour each day. To me, that's testament to the vast experiences our readers have, and that's nice to count on.

Still, I'd like to see one of these challenges last more than an hour. Either way, tune in later in the day to find out the answer. Unless you already know it.

Good luck.

For the next two weeks, Geek Gestalt will be on Road Trip 2009. After driving more than 12,000 miles in the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest and the Southeast over the last three years, I'll be writing about and photographing the best in technology, science, military, nature, aviation and more in Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota and Colorado. If you have a suggestion for someplace to visit, drop me a line. And in the meantime, join the Road Trip 2009 Facebook page and follow my Twitter feed.
