Music-streaming service Rdio is updating its catalog to support higher quality playback.
Announced in a blog post, Rdio will convert every song in its catalog to a higher-quality AAC at 320kbps. Rdio has partnered with Bob Weir from The Grateful Dead to push a new initiative called "Artists for Quality".
Subscription prices for Rdio will remain the same, with 320kbps as the new standard. In Australia, a web-only Rdio subscription costs AU$8.90, while an unlimited subscription is AU$12.90 and includes web and mobile listening.
Rdio follows in the footsteps of other streaming services that already offer 320kbps streams such as Spotify and Beats Music. Here is a list of the services that offer high-quality streams, though not all provide details on the format used:
Google Play Music All Access: 320kbps
Spotify: 320kbps (with Premium subscription)
MOG/Beats Music: 320kbps (MOG will soon be Beats Music in Australia)
Deezer: 320kbps (with Premium subscription)
Songl: 320kbps
Sony Music Unlimited: 320kbps
Rara: 320kbps Dolby Pulse
The momentum for higher quality music has been increasing over the past few years, with projects such as Neil Young's high-res Pono player in demand.
