Most gamers think of Donkey Kong and Pac-Man as good guys, but when these characters fall into the wrong hands, things can get pretty ugly.

Sony Pictures Entertainment released a new trailer for "Pixels" on Tuesday, with footage showing giant versions of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and other video game characters hellbent on destroying the Earth. The premise for "Pixels" is that NASA sent a time capsule into space in 1982 containing a detailed look at pop culture at the time, but aliens misinterpreted the message as an act of war.

To counter what they thought was an attack, the aliens send huge versions of the video game characters found in the capsule to destroy the Earth, and the only hope for humanity is a group of former professional arcade gamers. "Pixels" stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Josh Gad, and reunites "Game of Thrones" actors Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean. But perhaps the best scene is the cameo by Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani, who tries to get his creation to stop attacking, only to get attacked by the huge yellow character.

After watching the trailer, I'm cautiously optimistic about "Pixels," as it will seemingly let gamers relive our geeky video game-playing past. "Pixels" lands in theaters in the US on July 24, followed by an international release that includes Australia on July 30 and the UK on August 12.
