French telecommunications software company Alcatel bought PacketVideo's Network Solutions unit--no relation to the better-known Network Solutions unit of VeriSign--which makes video server technology. PacketVideo, based in San Diego, will continue selling software for mobile phones, cameras and other computing devices.
Network Solutions' existing customers include NTT DoCoMo and T-Mobile, Alcatel said in announcing the acquisition. It said the buy will bolster its video efforts, which already include offerings in messaging, telephony, conferencing, content delivery, streaming and downloads.
