Can you out-weird these weird Oreos? You could win $500,000

Oreo is holding a flavor contest, plus introducing three new flavors of its own. Waffles and syrup Oreos, anyone?

Can you come up with an Oreo flavor this weird? Er, "good," we mean, "this good."

Plain old Oreos are tough to beat. But the company is always trying -- with Marshmallow Peeps Oreos (sorry about the pink poo) or Swedish Fish Oreos, among others.

But perhaps Oreo's flavor scientists would like to take a vacation or something, because they're asking Oreo eaters to come up with their next wackadaisical flavor. The contest page explains that you can text your flavor idea, post it on social media with the suggested hashtags, or register and submit it on the contest page.

"Submission must be a smart and creative design and have a relevant theme to inspire a 2018 Oreo cookie flavor," the site notes, adding that -- duh -- "submission flavor must be delicious and/or evoke a feeling of joy and deliciousness." Ideas can be submitted through July 14, and the contest is only open to residents of the U.S. and Puerto Rico who are 18 and older.

In 2018, the company will produce and sell three finalist flavors, and the top winner gets $500,000 and a trip to New York. That's a lot of money for a couple minutes of cookie musing.

The new Firework Oreos have popping candy embedded.

Need some oddball Oreo flavors to jump-start your ideas? New Firework Oreos are out there in some stores, embedded with a Pop Rocks-like candy that crackles and pops in your mouth. The limited-edition cookie looks like a regular Oreo until you twist off one of the chocolate wafers and see the confetti-sparkled white filling, revealing the popping candy.

Not good enough? Delish.com reports, via Candyhunting, that Mississippi Mud Pie Oreos are coming this summer, with a creme filling split between chocolate and whipped cream flavor. And Waffles and Syrup Oreos are out this week, but only in Albertson's stores.

And if you don't like any of those flavors, well, that's the way the cookie crumbles.
