One man's journey to create Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber

Cue up your John Williams collection. We reveal the magic behind building a hyper-real "Star Wars" lightsaber.

Brad Lewis

It seems doubtful we will live "in a galaxy far, far away" in this lifetime, but we can at least build incredible homages to the "Star Wars" saga in the meantime.

One could say that Brad Lewis -- a BioWare senior visual-effects artist who works on the Star Wars: The Old Republic role-playing game -- wields a certain affinity for "Star Wars." After all, his personal blog Slothfurnace features systematic build guides for half a dozen previously created lightsabers that completely outshine those frail plastic toys that occupy countless toy shelves.

Lewis' latest work, modeled after Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber in "Star Wars: A New Hope," features some astounding attention to detail that would delight any fan of the epic sci-fi series.

"This particular build was very challenging due to the fact that there is very little space to work with on the inside 'envelope' of the saber," Lewis told Crave. "By that, I mean, I tried not to exceed the boundaries of the dimensions of the original movie prop, and had to hide all the electronic and mechanical aspects inside."

In the gallery below, Crave looks at how Lewis built his latest lightsaber, and shows off a few neat features of the famous weapon that may surprise you.
