New 'X-Files' trailer shows Mulder and Scully in pursuit of the truth

Aired Monday during new episodes of the TV shows "Gotham" and "Minority Report," fans were treated to a new teaser trailer presented in two parts for the new "X-Files" series.

We see not only FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), and their former supervisor Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), but also a hand holding a cigarette, which can only belong to the Smoking Man (William B. Davis).

"In 2002, my investigation ceased, but my personal obsession did not," Mulder says in the trailer's opening voiceover. "Our work is key to everything. I can't do this alone."

We see Mulder kicking around his "I Want To Believe" UFO office poster in his old basement office that has been ransacked, a flashback of the military carrying off a possible alien corpse and plenty of knowing looks between Mulder and Scully.

We also have a quick look at the very beginning of the first part of the trailer of Tad O'Malley -- an anchor of a popular conservative Internet news network -- played by Joel McHale ("Community"), coming out of the news chopper. O'Malley also finally reveals what the first episode of "X-Files" will be about.

"It'll probably start on a Friday," O'Malley tells Mulder in the trailer. "What will seem like an attack on America by terrorists or Russia driven by a well-oiled, well-armed and multinational group of elites using alien technology the government's been hiding for 70 years. Like yourself, I'm a true believer. What I need is your expertise."

However, the new footage has yet to reveal any glimpses of returning characters such as FBI special agent Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish) or Langly (Dean Haglund), Byers (Bruce Harwood) and Frohike (Tom Braidwood) of the Lone Gunmen.

We also have yet to see footage of new characters such as a victim of alien abduction played by Annet Mahendru ("The Americans"), as well as other characters played by Robbie Amell ("The Flash"), Lauren Ambrose ("Six Feet Under"), Rhys Darby ("Flight of the Conchords") and Kumail Nanjiani ("Silicon Valley").

"They police us, they spy on us, tell us that makes us safer. We've never been in more danger," Mulder says in the second part of the trailer. "This is my life. This is everything I believe in."

And of course, it wouldn't be "The X-Files" without Scully warning Mulder to be careful. "You are on dangerous ground here," she tells Mulder.

"I know what I'm doing," Mulder replies.

Now that we've got this new puzzle piece, fans can try to put together the next X-Files conspiracy by watching this latest footage with the first teaser trailer and second teaser trailer that both debuted in July.

"The X-Files" series creator Chris Carter will write and direct three of the six new episodes, while the original series veterans Darin Morgan, Glen Morgan and James Wong will be writing and directing the other episodes.

More details of the new series is still under wraps, at least until Fox premieres the first episode ahead of schedule at MIPCOM in Cannes, France, on October 6, and then at New York Comic-Con on October 10.

We can't wait to see what spooky mysteries await Mulder and Scully. Until then, catch up with all the previous seasons by binge-watching online. After all, you don't want to be the only X-Files fan who misses an Easter egg or shout out to the original series.

We will post higher quality trailers as they become available. But for now, prepare to get chills as you hear the theme song and Smoking Man's creepy voice again.
