New Acer laptops add 3D, Optimus

Acer is adding some new tech, from 3D support to Nvidia's latest GPUs, to its Aspire and Timeline laptop lines.

The 3D-enabled Acer Aspire 5745DG.

A handful of new laptop announcements from Acer kick off the week, covering everything from 3D-enabled systems to the long-life TimelineX series. Most of the new features offered are things we've previously seen on other laptops (specifically Nvidia's 3D Vision and Optimus), but we've been liking Acer's designs lately, so it's nice to see them add these useful extras. We've also seen some of these mentioned out of Europe previously, so they shouldn't come as a complete surprise.

Acer Aspire 5745DG
This is probably the single most interesting new entry, taking a familiar 15-inch Aspire and adding Nvidia's 3D Vision technology (which we've previously seen on only a handful of laptops). Also includes are an Intel Core i5 CPU and Nvidia's new GT 420M graphics. The system will be available starting in late October for $999.

Acer Aspire AS5742G/AS5745/AS7745
This is a trio of multimedia laptops. The AS5742G uses Nvidia's Optimus graphics-switching technology, while the AS5745 presumably does not. Both have 15.6-inch displays and use Intel's Core i3, i5, and i7 CPUs. The larger AS7745 has a 17.3-inch display (but at only 1,600x900), and uses ATI's Radeon 5650 as its GPU. Price and availability for this trio aren't clear yet.

Acer Aspire AS8943G
Here's something we can get a little more excited about. This is a refresh of an existing 18.4-inch laptop with full 1,920x1,080 resolution. The CPU is a quad-core Intel Core i7, and the GPU is ATI's high-end Radeon 5850. This model is available immediately for $1,499.

Acer Aspire 1830T
This 11-inch ultraportable is part of Acer's long-life line of Timeline laptops. This time around, the CPU is a ULV version of Intel's Core i7, so we have high hopes for some serious computing power, especially as most 11-inch laptops have low-end Intel or AMD CPUs. This new system will be a whopping (for an 11-inch laptop) $899, although Core i3 and i5 versions will start at $599.
