Microsoft upgrades UltimateTV service
Microsoft announced on Thursday a software upgrade for its UltimateTV service. The company is delivering the upgrade for free starting Thursday over DirecTV's satellite service. The UltimateTV service offers digital video recording and Web surfing capabilities for DirecTV's satellite television subscribers. The upgrade lets subscribers navigate menus and the electronic programming guide, which displays show titles and times. The upgrade also improves the way the software organizes recorded shows. DirecTV has more than 10.7 million subscribers to its satellite service. Microsoft has never confirmed the number of subscribers to UltimateTV, but sources in January said that the service had been getting about 1,200 new customers per month. The software giant restructured its UltimateTV group in late January, moving it from the Microsoft TV division to a part of a new television services group within Microsoft's MSN division, according to the company.
