The Darwin Awards meets The Gashlycrumb Tinies in an unexpected indie-pop public-service announcement from Victoria's Metro Trains.
It sounds like a cutesy indie-pop hit in the style of Feist and "The Bird and the Bee" as it ticks off a gruesome list of stupid ways to get killed. Penned by Cat Empire keyboardist and Sydney-dweller Ollie McGill and sung by Tangerine Kitty, the track is actually a train-safety advertisement.
In the five days since its release on YouTube, the song has gone nuts, accumulating nearly 5 million views — probably because there are so many contradictions. An adorable pop song about horrific deaths that is actually entertaining, produced by a public-transport institution?
Well played, Metro Trains.
