Logitech vs. Microsoft: Battle of the (boring) cordless keyboards

Reviews of desktop sets from Microsoft and Logitech.

They might not be sexy, but the affordable, workaday mouse and keyboard set is a mainstay for any respectable input device maker. And while Logitech's $60 Cordless Desktop S520 is more expensive than Microsoft's new $50 Wireless Media Desktop 1000, both are reasonably priced for what you get.

And what is it, exactly, that you get with these desktop sets? Each offers a standard battery-powered wireless mouse and keyboard. Microsoft went all out on extra hot keys; Logitech, as it's wont, paid more attention to the fit-and-finish, with fewer hot keys but more thought invested in their location on the keyboard.

You can read our reviews for the full rundown. We like the Logitech set better overall for the extra attention to detail. If you're less design-conscious and you're chiefly after a deal, Microsoft's set shouldn't disappoint.
