'LM3D' racing to be first 3D-printed electric car to market (Tomorrow Daily 271)

Jeff discusses a drone avoidance algorithm from an MIT student, a small device looking to transform regular homes into part of the Internet of Things and a company aiming to launch its 3D-printed electric car by 2017.

We're marking the third time MIT features on the show this week; every story has been from a different group at MIT, and this one is from the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL). A CSAIL PhD student created an algorithm for his custom drone, giving it the ability to scan for objects and avoid them in real time, all while zooming around at 30 mph.

South Korean startup Naran hopes it can make it easy for anyone to make their home a smart home with the help of their small device, the Microbot Push. It's a little box you attach to any device you want to automate, and a small mechanical arm makes it possible to control just about anything wirelessly (as long as it requires the push of a button). No word yet on release or pricing, but it's a cool concept that might help cash-strapped or tech-challenged people wade into the Internet of Things.

Local Motors believes it will be the first company to officially bring a 3D-printed electric car to consumers with its LM3D Swim. Right now, the car is about 75 percent 3D-printed, but Local Motors aims to make that 90 percent by the time the cars ship to potential owners in 2017. Preorders start next year, and buyers will be shelling out about $53,000 for the opportunity to own Local Motors' fancy little future car.
