At least one scientist has tried to prove that the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier as depicted in "The Avengers" would fly about as well as an ostrich.
But that hasn't stopped an ambitious Russian modeler from creating a scaled-down version of the fictional aircraft carrier. And what do you know, it actually flies.
Of course it's made of lightweight materials, not steel. The quadrotor is about 50 inches long and only weighs about 38 ounces.
Creator Native118, whose credits include a flying RC model of a Dragon C-21 from "Avatar" and the DeLorean from "Back to the Future," describes the helicarrier project in a Russian-language forum thread.
As seen in the vid below, the quadrotor takes off neatly from a pond, flies about, and then lands perfectly. Native118 seems to have the tricky rotor-balancing down pat.
All it needs is an on-board flamethrower.
