It's only a matter of days until "Twin Peaks" returns for its long-awaited third season, but Showtime hasn't released anything that looks like an actual trailer. Instead, we've gotten a series of teasers, most of which are full of clips from the show's original run in the '90s. A teaser released Thursday gives fans something more substantial to cling to, with fresh footage culled from the upcoming 18 episodes.

Showtime is still playing coy with plot and character details, but there's a strongly dark and ominous tone to the teaser, which kicks off with a frenetic and blurry shot of a shadowy staircase.

The video bypasses the quirky and humorous side of "Twin Peaks" and instead instills a sense of foreboding. Characters old and new appear in brief flashes.

On a bittersweet note, we also see a momentary clip with director and co-creator David Lynch appearing as Gordon Cole alongside FBI forensic specialist Albert Rosenfield, played by Miguel Ferrer. Ferrer, who also appeared in the original series, died from cancer earlier this year.

The return of "Twin Peaks" debuts on Showtime on May 21.
