Nearly 40 years ago, director Ridley Scott made his name with two films that took us to nightmarish possible futures: "Blade Runner" and "Alien".

Today, Scott returns to the Alien universe once again with "Alien: Covenant". We caught up with the legendary director to find out if he thinks the future has turned out better or worse than he imagined. Hit play on the video above to find out what he had to say about artificial intelligence, the fast-moving world of technology and whether we'll be forced to leave our planet behind.

As well as revisiting "Alien", Scott has produced long-awaited sequel "Blade Runner 2049", to be released in October. Both films have a deeply ambivalent view of technology, which remains one of Scott's preoccupations as the pace of technological change accelerates. "The digital world is screaming past our ears," he says. "God only knows where we'll be in 20 years time."

Scott has mixed feelings about technology, and you can see that in "Covenant". Star Michael Fassbender plays a dual role as androids who both help and hinder the film's human characters, showing both the potential benefits and the potential risks from advanced technology.

Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup and Danny McBride are also along for the ride in "Covenant", in which the titular spaceship heads into space to find a new home. Things don't go very well for them, however, when they arrive on a sinister planet and encounter some rather unfriendly alien life.

"Covenant" is a direct sequel to "Prometheus", but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to go back and watch "Prometheus" again. Scott will be back in the director's chair for another sequel, reportedly titled "Awakening". But who knows where technology will have taken us by then?

"Alien: Covenant" is in cinemas in Australia now, in the UK from today, 12 May, and in theatres in the US from 19 May.
