And he runs like the wind.
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) returns in Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning Part One.
Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning Part One's first trailer landed Monday. The two-minute preview hints at the usual mix of epic chases, intense fights, globetrotting and, of course, Tom Cruise's superspy Ethan Hunt leaping off tall things, looking deadly serious, driving madly and sprinting in all his cardio glory.
The seventh movie in the long-running spy franchise is scheduled to open in theaters on July 14, 2023, after being delayed by the pandemic. Dead Reckoning Part Two is set for release June 28, 2024, with Christopher McQuarrie directing both.
We get our first glimpses of new characters played by Marvel actors Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales' villain, and team leader Hunt's classic allies played by Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. We also see Vanessa Kirby back as White Widow, the arms dealer introduced in 2018's Mission: Impossible -- Fallout.
Henry Czerny returns as Eugene Kittridge -- the spymaster last seen chasing down Hunt in the original 1996 Mission: Impossible. The trailer suggests he'll play an antagonist role in Dead Reckoning, but that could be some classic Mission: Impossible misdirection.
It's hard to figure out much about the plot based on the trailer, but it looks like there's some kind of biological weapon and a cross-shaped key (probably for some kind of doomsday device). Ferguson's Isla Faust appears to get into a sword fight with Morales' baddy, and we also get a glimpse of her wearing an eyepatch at one point -- perhaps the duel goes badly for Isla?
The trailer comes ahead of another delayed Cruise blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick, hitting theaters on Friday.
