Donald Trump has returned to Twitter with his first tweet after winning the US presidential election.

"Such a beautiful and important evening!" Trump tweeted. "The forgotten man and woman will never be forgotten again. We will all come together as never before".

The tweet has already been retweeted more than 30,000 times.

Trump's Twitter account was a key weapon in his election campaign. Even before running for office, the divisive real-estate mogul and reality TV star has long used Twitter to fire off incendiary messages, railing against "haters and losers" in the media and in his own Republican party.

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has yet to tweet since conceding the contest to Trump.
