Discounted Missoni clothing line crashes Target.com

Come on Target, everyone knows that discounted Missoni dresses are going to bring in crowds. This is no time for a site meltdown.

Apparently, Target.com didn't realize how popular discounted Missoni clothes would be, or maybe they need practice at handling traffic spikes.

Target's Web site buckled yesterday under the load of online shoppers who were interested in a luxury clothing line offered at a discount there and now bargain hunters are ticked off.

Apparently the handlers of Target.com and those who came up with the idea of offering part of the popular Missoni fashion line at a discount misjudged the interest. According to reports, Target.com crashed yesterday at 9 a.m., three hours after the Missoni items became available. The site was down for at least several hours according to The New York Times. Today, the site appeared to be operating normally.

"Due to an overwhelming amount of traffic to Target.com as a result of the Missoni launch this morning, guests are unable to access the site," Target said in a statement. "Providing a positive shopping experience to our guests is important to us and we are working to get the site back up as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience."

Online shoppers who missed out on the wild patterns and knit fabrics that Missoni is known for (according to my girlfriend) took to Twitter to bash Target.

Target has seen success by striking deals to offer designer fashion lines at a discount but this may be the first time that demand caused a site outage.
