David Fincher might direct 'World War Z' sequel
Zombie Fight Club? The director could be teaming up again with frequent co-worker Brad Pitt -- but will Trent Reznor get involved?
The first rule of Zombie Fight Club is let's talk about Zombie Fight Club. According to Variety, director David Fincher is close to a deal to team up with Brad Pitt on "World War Z 2," the sequel to the 2013 horror film based on the book by Max Brooks.
Fincher and Pitt are old pals, having worked together on "Fight Club," "Se7en," and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." Fincher also directed "Gone Girl," "The Social Network," "Zodiac" and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," and is a producer on "House of Cards."
In "World War Z," Pitt plays former UN investigator Gerry Lane, who travels the world trying to stop a zombie epidemic. Brooks' book is divided into chapters bouncing around the globe, each one delivering a different first-person account of the epidemic, a style partially inspired by Studs Terkel's 1974 book "Working." So there's plenty of material left for a sequel, and more.
While Variety's report is unconfirmed, the site's sources say production could begin early in 2018. Marc Forster directed the original "World War Z."
Paramount Pictures didn't immediately respond to a CNET request for comment.
Social media reaction to the Fincher-Pitt pairing was immediate, with some saying it'll make the sequel a must-see, and others unsure it's right for the director.
And some were mostly concerned with the music. Nine Inch Nails founder Trent Reznor and composer Atticus Ross scored three of Fincher's prior films, winning an Academy Award for "The Social Network" and a Grammy for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," so many hope they will return.
