Creative ships ZiiSound D5 Bluetooth speaker

Creative's new flagship wireless speaker is now shipping for $299.

The ZiiSound D5, which retails for $299, is Creative's flagship wireless speaker.

Images of Creative Labs' new Bluetooth speaker, the ZiiSound D5, have been floating around the Web for the past few months, but the product is now officially available.

Creative is calling the D5 "the flagship" model in its line of wireless speaker systems, which includes the Inspire S2 Wireless system, as well as the D200 and D100. The D5 speaker works with any device that supports stereo Bluetooth and, according to Creative,  it's made with premium components and features a full-frame "monocoque exoskeleton for maximum rigidity." Also, according to company, its ZiiSound D5 has the apt-X high performance low latency audio codec that delivers superior Bluetooth audio.

For a limited time, Creative is bundling both a Bluetooth USB transmitter for your laptop or desktop computer and a transmitter for iPods (except for the Shuffle), iPhones, and iPads. We don't know when the deal expires, but eventually, Creative will only include the Apple transmitter and the USB transmitter will be an optional $39.99 accessory.

Of course, you can also connect to the speaker via your device's built-in Bluetooth; however, according to Creative, the dongle makes connecting to the speaker slightly easier and it improves the speaker's  sound quality. It's important to note that the D5 has an integrated iPod dock for charging your Apple mobile devices. That's unusual for a Bluetooth speaker system.

Creative did a good job with the Inspire S2 system, which we rated highly (read full review here), so we expect the D5 will also sound quite decent. We'll let you know just how decent when we post a full review in the coming weeks. In the meantime, feel free to comment on the future of Bluetooth audio. It hasn't taken off the way a lot of folks thought it might. So, is it finally ready to gain more traction in the marketplace?

The D5 works with all stereo Bluetooth enabled devices and comes with transmitters for iPods and computers. Creative
