In an open letter that is as moving as it is funny, Carrie Fisher bid goodbye and good luck to the most famous and popular character she ever played.
Before and after her Star Wars days, Carrie Fisher struggled with life: drug abuse, eating disorder and mental illness. But as her own life moved on, Princess Leia has remained the same — a shining beacon of honour and bravery.
In a new, disarmingly honest letter to her iconic character, posted on website Bullett Media, Fisher seems to be bidding the princess farewell. It is equal parts incisively funny and deeply poignant as she considers the imaginary heroes that live suspended in time while the actors who brought them to life age and move on.
You always act the heroine; I snort the stuff in the feeble attempt to dim the glare of your intense, intergalactic antics. You take the glory; I give way to age. You: so physically well and well-meaning it makes me mentally ill — well, something does, anyway. While you fight the dark side with your light, white ways, I'm in the sarlacc pit, covered in Jabba's vile body fluids. Will it ever end? It probably won't, but I will. I'm pretty sure I will. My sequels will finally, blessedly stop, while yours will define and absorb an age.
