On the occasion of Steve Jobs leaving as Apple CEO, I feel like a sports fan watching my biggest rival’s superstar retiring. As a Microsoft and Android Fangirl, I hated Apple and Steve Jobs for all the great products that came out and Apple’s attempts to crush Android. But I still can’t stop thinking about how much Jobs changed the game. For me (a life long Yankee Fan), it was like whenI watched Red Sox Outfielder Jim Rice retire. I hated him for beating on the Yankees, but I still tipped my hat to his playing ability. So, to Steve Jobs, I wish you well.
Dear Buzz Crew,
After seeing our close to $200 cable bill(Including Internet) wife and I decided to cut the cord. Through PS3 I have membership to Netflix, Hulu Plus and a digital antenna. With it we get all the local channels for free (Who knew?) :) Netflix has tons of content for my 5 year old boy we watch the shows we couldn’t for the past 5 years(without commercials from Netflix) from being FT parents and workers and I am proud to say we are not going back! At the end of the day $16 content membership + $30 internet access + $0 over the air content = over $150 of savings per month. Why wont more people do this? Seriously?
Love the SHOW!!!
Thanks Molly, Brian and the anonymous caller from last week! Molly and the caller were right that I needed a few more signals of interest before assuming Aaron Rothman is interested in me (Even if he is interested, the caller’s life of dating a pseudo-celeb didn’t sound appealing). However, Brian gave me what I was really after- someone to tell me to just go for it.
So, I emailed Aaron to meet for after-work drinks with a few co-workers of mine. I told him he should bring whomever, painting this meet-up as a (totally platonic) group outing. I figured this would be a safe way to get to know him socially. Luckily, he replied yes!
I made sure to bring 4 other co-workers and I selected a chill/neutral bar near his office. He showed up right on time, with a guy friend. I know it didn’t mean he was single, but I was so thrilled it wasn’t a girl. He bought a round and we all went through introductions. Everything was going so well…
Then, Aaron introduced his friend, Adam- as his boyfriend! My heart sank. Of course I had to contain my disappointment, but I wanted nothing more than leave right then. I knew the right thing to do was to keep a smile on my face and make the most of the evening. I’d inevitably see Aaron at future conferences, so I couldn’t let the situation get awkward. A few more rounds of drinks and small-talk, and I could make an excuse and leave without it being weird.
A few drinks turned into a few too many, and I was soon having the time of my life with Aaron and Adam. We got to talking about tech (they are both gigantic nerds) and Adam revealed, to my horror, that he listens to podcasts like This Is My Next and Buzz out Loud. He brought up the fact that someone, who just happened to be named Katie, had written in about her crush on a Google product manager, who just happened to be named Aaron Rothman. I realized at this point that Adam already knew and probably told Aaron (which he had). At that point I had liquored myself up pretty well, and just started confessing everything. Aaron was a perfect gentleman about it and totally diffused the situation with humor.
Anyways, it clearly wasn’t a fairytale ending, but I am really glad I can call Aaron and Adam my new friends :)
I cc’d Aaron on this email to make sure he is alright with me revealing so much about him.
Thought you all would appreciate the closure!

Molly and B,
You were both 100% correct about the Asian fellow manning up. For the
record, my wife and I have been together for 25 years. The fact that I’m white and she is black has never once made a difference. Frankly, if my family had cared, that would have been their problem. The flip-side of this is a dear Asian friend who dutifully caved to her parent’s pressure, married a nice, Asian momma’s boy and was miserable for years. She ended up in her late forties, childless and miserable.
Sooner or later, a man’s got to recognize that he doesn’t need his momma’s permission to live his life.
