BioWare cuts 'Star Wars' staff

As of late, it appears that the force is not strong with the Star Wars: The Old Republic role-playing game.

Several weeks after the surprising announcement of losing 400,000 players in mere months, BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka and co-founder Greg Zeschuk noted in a forum post that the company is bidding "farewell to some talented, passionate, and exceptionally hard-working people who helped make Star Wars: The Old Republic a reality."

The layoffs affect the Austin, Texas, division of BioWare an Electronic Arts-owned studio largely responsible for the creation of the game. The announcement lacked any specific information regarding the number of employees let go in the restructuring, and EA did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment.

BioWare's founders noted that a bright future awaits those playing the "Star Wars"-theme MMORPG, or massively multiplayer online role-playing game: "We still have a very substantial development team working on supporting and growing the game, and we feel we are in a strong position, with your continued involvement and feedback, to continue to build Star Wars: The Old Republic as one of the most compelling and successful online experiences in the world today. There are many strong initiatives planned for cool new content and new features that we're excited to tell you about in the upcoming weeks and months."

In related news, BioWare today announced new details regarding the upcoming 1.3 'Allies' update for Star Wars: The Old Republic, which adds new features, including a group finder tool, legacy perks, an update to the Alderaan war zone, adaptive gear, and more.
