Asus' MS238H in the zone, at least from the side

The Asus MS238H looks good from the front, but even better from the side.

Give Asus' MS238H a push. No! Actually don't do that. Josh Miller/CNET

With the deluge of monitors released every month, it is sometimes difficult for a vendor to distinguish a new product from the rest of the pack. Most monitors that manufacturers release are plain black, with a conventional stand, and from an aesthetic standpoint, they don't offer anything interesting. For the most part, this type of design philosophy works, as most users are more concerned with a monitor's screen output than its aesthetic. Still, there are a lot of plain, black monitors out there, so using a striking design to catch a potential customer's eye is not unheard of.

With the MS238H, Asus does just that. From the front, the MS238H looks like a typical black monitor, except  that you can't see its footstand. However, From its profile, it starts to look a bit weird.

A cylindrical footstand? It's not the most stable thing in the world, but it definitely looks interesting. Josh Miller/CNET

Yep, see that thing that looks like a CPU fan funnel? That's what holds the monitor up. You may be thinking, "well, that thing looks like it would topple over in a second if knocked just slightly from the front." Well, "Ms. Knowitall," I'm here to tell you that you're absolutely correct. When it's knocked from the front, the MS238H goes down faster than Mike Tyson's opponents in the '80s. But pushed from the side, it's actually really stable.

Fortunately, there's more to a monitor that it's looks and stability, so check out our full review of the Asus MS238H to see if it offers a delicious, creamy nougat center.
