Apple TV to add more prime-time shows with CW Network app
CW Network confirms that its TV Now app is headed to Apple TV with full episodes of shows like "The Carrie Diaries," "Arrow," and "The Vampire Diaries."
Apple TV is branching into app partnerships with television networks by striking a deal with the CW Network.
CW, a joint venture between Warner Bros. and CBS, confirmed to CNET that the partnership is indeed in the works. (CBS is the parent company of CNET.)
"We can confirm that we will have an app launching on Apple TV soon," a CW spokesperson told CNET on Thursday. "No launch date at this time. The app will have full episodes of our prime-time shows, and be ad-supported, without requiring authentication from a cable provider."
Apple TV already offers streaming from Netflix and Hulu, but this will be the first streaming deal with a television network.
CW did not provide any other information about the partnership. CNET contacted Apple, and we'll update the story when we hear back.
Meanwhile, rumors have been flying that Apple has been in talks with HBO to bring HBO's on-demand programming to its set-top streaming box.
CW's TV Now apps are already available on Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Windows 8. According to the MacRumors blog, the Apple TV app will work similarly. It apparently will be located on the home screen, offer full episodes of network shows like "Arrow," "The Carrie Diaries," and "The Vampire Diaries" and include content previews and extras.
