Apple delays iLife launch

Apple Computer pushes back by a week the scheduled launch for iLife, its collection of programs for playing music, making movies, editing photos and creating custom DVDs.

Apple Computer has delayed by a week the scheduled launch for iLife, its collection of programs for playing music, making movies, editing photos and creating custom DVDs.

The software suite was set to go on sale for $49 on Saturday, with free downloads of two of its components--iMovie 3 and iPhoto 2--to be made available free from Apple's site. Apple says iLife will ship Jan. 31 and the downloads will be made available that day as well.

"We will be shipping our iLife retail package and making iPhoto2 and iMovie3 available for download on our Web site by Jan. 31, a week later than we originally announced," the company wrote in an e-mail.

Apple did not provide a reason for the delay.

In addition to new versions of iMovie and iPhoto, The iLife bundle also includes iDVD 3, which is not going to be made available as a free download, and iTunes 3, which is already available.

Steve Jobs showed off the programs as part of his keynote speech at Macworld Expo earlier this month.

The new versions of iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD add features and are more tightly integrated with one another. For example, music from iTunes can be used as the soundtrack of an iMovie or as background for an iPhoto slide show.

Until midmorning Thursday, Apple's site had listed iLife and the new versions of iPhoto and iMovie as "Coming January 25." The status of the programs was then changed to "coming soon."
