Here's a creative alternative to avoiding higher gas prices: Equip your golf cart with GPS navigation, air conditioning, and a DVD entertainment system, and turn it into your primary road-going car. According to the Arizona Republic, more than 50 statewide dealers specialize in selling or creating souped-up golf carts, which are considered alternative-fuel vehicles, and are therefore eligible for federal tax breaks.
To be street-legal, the carts have to be fitted with headlights, taillights, turn signals, windshield wipers, and license plates. They also have to stay on roads that have a speed limit of less than 35mph. Amazingly, the Republic says that more than 30,000 golf cars were registered with the Arizona DOT in 2006. It looks like the electric-car revolution is being masterminded from the clubhouse.
