Anime-inspired short tells 'Star Wars' tale from Empire's perspective

The incredible animation "TIE Fighter" by UK artist Paul Johnson shows a "Star Wars" starship battle from the perspective of the Galactic Empire.

You've probably seen "Star Wars" a few (or, if you're like me, a few hundred) times, but you've likely never seen it like this. Instead of focusing on Luke, Leia, Han and the rest of the members of the Rebel Alliance, this incredible animated short by UK artist Paul Johnson shows a starship battle through the eyes of the Galactic Empire.

In the clip, an Imperial probe droid scouts out a Rebel fleet, and after the Empire decides to attack, an epic space battle breaks out. Throughout the clip, members of the Imperial Army are featured as their TIE fighters and other starships do battle with the Rebels.

The whole thing was animated to look like a cross between 1980s-era anime and classic 1990s-era "Star Wars" video games like TIE Fighter. The result is a pretty stellar short that whisks viewers away to a galaxy far, far away for a fresh perspective on the Galactic Civil War between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire.

It took Johnson about four years worth of weekends to complete the short, and he used music by Zak Rahman and sound design by audio technician Joseph Leyva. Check out the seven-minute animated short at the top of this post, and let's hope the Force is with Johnson and he releases even more "Star Wars" anime-inspired videos in the future.
