From "Tomb Raider" to "Captain Marvel": Angelina Jolie could be in line to direct Marvel's first female-led film.

That august organ OK! Magazine claims Marvel is ready to stump up $20 million for Jolie to direct the film. When the "Captain Marvel" movie hits theatres in July 2018, it'll be the 19th in a series of interlinked films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It will also be the first Marvel outing to be headlined by a female superhero -- although " Agent Carter" is currently kicking ass and taking names on TV and " Jessica Jones" is coming to Netflix this year.

Captain Marvel is a name adopted by various characters in Marvel comics, beginning as alien soldier Captain Mar-Vell in 1967. The movie will focus on the current incumbent, Carol Danvers, who made her debut as an Air Force officer in 1968. From 1977 she was known as Ms Marvel, adopting the title of Captain Marvel in 2010 with a new costume designed by British artist Jamie McKelvie. The title role in the film is yet to be cast.

Winner of both an Oscar and a Golden Globe, actress Angelina Jolie made her directorial debut in 2011 with "In the Land of Blood and Honey", a love story set in Sarajevo in the early 1990s during the Bosnian War. Her second film, "Unbroken", told the real-life story of WW2 prisoner of war and Olympian runner Louis Zamperini. The film took $31.7 million in its opening weekend this Christmas.

Jolie's next stint in the director's chair will be "By the Sea", which she has also written. Jolie will star with her husband Brad Pitt.

The next few years will see a glut of superhero movies, with "Fantastic Four", "Ant-Man" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" all in theatres in the next few months. Before "Captain Marvel" arrives, we're expecting to see a female-led spin-off from Sony's Spider-Man movies and a .
