An ancient mutant awakens in first 'X-Men: Apocalypse' trailer

Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox have released the first trailer for "X-Men: Apocalypse," telling of the powerful, ancient mutant our heroes must defeat to save the world from a bleak future.

Are you ready for Apocalypse?

Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox released the first trailer for "X-Men: Apocalypse" on Friday, giving us our first sense of the powerful enemy the X-Men must defeat if they're going to save the world.

In the trailer's opening scenes, we see a young Jean Grey (played by "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner) have a vision of the end of the world, with chaos, destruction and death all around her.

This vision will become reality if the X-Men fail to save the world from the film's villian, the first mutant, who a multi-thousand-year slumber determines that the world he's woken up to isn't worth saving and must be destroyed.

True to his namesake, we learn in the trailer that Apocalypse always has four powerful horsemen by his side, and it's up to the X-Men to defeat them all and save the world.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is the culmination of a trilogy that began with "X-Men: First Class," but you can bet it won't be the last X-men film we'll see (in fact, we'll definitely see some TV series in the near future). The movie has an all-star cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Olivia Munn, James McAvoy and Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" will be released in theaters around the world beginning on May 18, 2016, including in the UK on May 19, Australia on May 26 and the US on May 27.
