It might be cold in much of the world, but it's the best time yet to take a big bite of Ice Cream Sandwich.
Amazon today cut the price of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Google's flagship Android 4.0 phone, to just $99.99 via its Amazon Wireless store.
There is a catch though, of course. The low price--roughly half that of similar online deals from places like Letstalk.com--is only available to new Verizon Wireless customers and naturally requires a new contract with the carrier.
That means that if you're already locked into a Verizon contract like me and eagerly counting the 81 days until you can finally upgrade from your whacked-out Droid 2 with the flash that goes off every five seconds since you dropped it in the shower--hey, the gadget news doesn't stop just because I wash my hair--you're out of luck.
For existing Verizon customers looking to upgrade, Amazon charges $259.99 for the Galaxy Nexus. Not such a hot deal, but better than what you'll pay if you're the type who wants to have your Ice Cream Sandwich and travel with it, too--an unlocked Galaxy Nexus via Amazon gets only a $70 discount, bringing the price down to a whopping $729.99. Ouch.
So, if you're looking to jump to Verizon and are in the market for a top-of-the-line Android phone, this deal might be for you. If you're already in the custody of Verizon and looking for an upgrade but don't have $260 to blow, you could always wait five minutes--there's a pretty good chance a dozen new Android phones will debut in that time.
