Altec targets bed stands with Octiv Mini

The minimalist Altec Lansing Octiv Mini (M102) is a supercompact single-speaker iPhone/iPod audio system that turns into an alarm clock when you add Altec's free Alarm Rock app.

The Octiv Mini will be available in July for $59.99. Altec Lansing

If you ever wanted a tiny dock for your iPhone or iPod that put out half-decent sound for its size, Altec Lansing says it has the answer with its new Octiv Mini, also known as the M102.

The Mini, which carries an MSRP of $59.99, is about as minimal as you get, with no buttons or anything in the way of features. However, when you download Altec's free Alarm Rock app to your iPhone or iPod Touch, it suddenly turns into a "functional" alarm clock. (The speaker is shielded for iPhone use, so you don't have to worry about any static).

Measuring 4x4 inches, the one-speaker sound system has a tapered, eye-catching design. We've been testing it out. It plays bigger than its size and we like the fact that it takes up very little room wherever you decide to stick it.

At $59.99, the Octiv Mini is a tad pricey, and we would have liked it if it had some sort of auxiliary input (the unit we got has one, but Altec told us the final units probably won't have an input for other audio devices). Hopefully, the street price will be in the $40-$45 range, which makes this an enticing buy. We'll have a full review up in the next couple of days.
