'Alien: Covenant' prologue short resurrects some old friends

The chilling two-minute video nicely connects the end of 2012's "Prometheus" with the upcoming film.

(Warning: Plot spoilers ahead if you haven't seen 2012's "Prometheus.")

The four minutes of "Last Supper" footage released in February for "Alien: Covenant" are pretty jolly, as the cast of the Covenant drink and joke around (mostly). But it's quite a contrast from that to "The Crossing," a two-minute-plus video released on Wednesday and billed by 20th Century Fox as an official prologue short.

Of course, the video was released on "Alien Day," meaning April 26 (4-26). The day was chosen to match the numbers in LV-426, an earlier name for the moon where the original "Alien" takes place.

The short smoothly connects director Ridley Scott's 2012 "Prometheus" to the upcoming "Covenant," and picks up with crew members Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and android David (Michael Fassbender) as the lone Prometheus survivors. Now on an abandoned Engineer ship, Shaw repairs David and slips into cryosleep as he walks the ship alone. It's every bit as creepy and chilling as you'd expect -- Fassbender can make lines like, "I never experienced such compassion" sound like he's pronouncing a death sentence.

You'll want to watch it for yourself, but don't miss David uttering the classic line from Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Ozymandias" in the clip's final seconds. Anyone who's taken a high-school English class knows the double meaning of, "Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"

Oh yeah, there's likely to be a lot of despairing aboard the Covenant when the new movie comes out May 19 (May 12 in the U.K., May 18 in Australia).
