Ahem! iOS 7 cannot save your iPhone from drowning

A hoax ad circulating on social media apparently prompts some iPhone owners to dunk their devices.

Attention Internet! Please ignore the above and carry on.

If you've heard somewhere on the Internet that iOS 7makes your iPhone magically waterproof, please put your phone down and step away from the edge of the pool.

A fake Apple ad has been making the rounds on social media and (possibly) leading to the destruction of some iPhones by the more gullible among us.

The faux promo convincingly mimics the look and feel of an iPhone ad, but also makes the bold declaration that:

In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone's power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone's delicate circuitry.

This is apparently possible because iOS 7 upgrades your iPhone to be able "to instantly detect sudden changes in thermodistribution." Uh-huh.

While the hoax has spread like wildfire on Twitter, at least a few folks have taken to tweeting their rage after voluntarily dunking and destroying their devices.

It's not completely ridiculous to think that Apple could release a waterproof smartphone, as plenty such devices and waterproof cases do exist, but it seems pretty unlikely that a software update would be the way such a new feature would be enabled.

Sorry, iPhone owners, the age of iMessaging in the shower is not quite upon us.
