Acer laptop hedges wireless bets

PC maker Acer is covering the bases with a new notebook PC that supports three different versions of the 802.11 wireless networking standard. The company is demonstrating at the NetWorld Interop Conference in Las Vegas a version of its TravelMate 630 laptop equipped with a wireless networking chip from Atheros Communications that supports the original 802.11b standard, the newer 802.11a and the emerging 802.11g. Acer did not say when versions of the laptop with the Atheros chip will be available to the public. Conflicting standards have been a stumbling block preventing wider adoption of wireless networking.
