$5.7 million later, 'Veronica Mars' movie trailer is here

One of Kickstarter's biggest projects shows the fruits of its labor with an official trailer.

Veronica Mars

The Veronica Mars movie project set the standard for film crowdfunding when it obliterated its $2 million Kickstarter goal and racked up $5.7 million in pledges. I was one of the 91,585 backers. "Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas has been faithfully updating us for nearly a year on how the film is progressing. Now, the trailer is finally here.

The movie itself is scheduled for nationwide release on March 14, but the official trailer took a bow last night and is now up on YouTube for all to enjoy.

So, how are things looking for our lady detective heroine as she approaches her 10-year high school reunion and a fresh murder mystery to solve? Pretty good. For those who haven't been following the Kickstarter updates, it's a big reassurance that favorite characters are returning. There's also a good dose of snarkiness and a respectable right-hook punch delivered by star Kristen Bell.

There's an appealingly noirish darkness to the cinematography and a car crash that was probably made possible by the expanded budget. All of this bodes well for the crowdfunding model that brought the movie into existence. If the actual film holds up to the promise of the trailer (and the audiences show up to support it), "Veronica Mars" could truly be the crowdfunding star its creators envisioned.
