CNET First Look
The Luma Surround Wi-Fi is an OK home mesh systemCNET editor Dong Ngo explains how the Luma Surround Wi-Fi home mesh system is similar to speed dating.
[MUSIC] This is the Luma Surround Wi-Fi. It's an exotic name but it's actually a home-based WiFi network just like the Eero and the Google WiFi that I have here. Now, compared with the other two, the Luma here is not exactly better. Even slightly worse. But, first take a look. It comes with three identical units. You take one of these, connect to your modem And then [UNKNOWN] to [UNKNOWN] to create a large WiFi network. The system can cover up to 4,000, or even 5,000 square feet, depending on your home. Now the set up is super easy as long as you have a smartphone. Because everything is done on this luma mobile app. Now after the set up there's not much to do because the system has very limited features. And setting up. It does have some feature however for example this built in security that's supposedly keeps the entire network safe from online threat. You can also turn on for the entire network or certain group of devices. And finally, you can pause internet to the entire network or a certain group of devices too And you can actually use Alexa to do that like this. Alexa, tell Luma to pass the iPad. The thing is you can also tell Alexa to resume Dungo's iPad. So just make sure that Dungo does not speak English. Which actually might have noticed he does. Now I do have the Echo here but unfortunately I cannot demo that feature for you. Because of another unit thing about the Luma. It does not work with all internet types. If you use it with your modem at home, you'll be fine. But if you use it with existing network, like in a condo, a campus, or an office it might not work at all. If the existing network has some security features Here at CNET office, where every single router I've reviewed, hundreds of them, they all worked. The Luma doesn't. Now the system is connected to Luma, but it's client cannot connect to the Internet. When it does work, the performance was okay. By a small margin it's the slowest among the three here. So, get it only if you want share a moderate broadband connection, Now a set of three unit [UNKNOWN] can be had for $299. Which is the same cost as the Google wi-fi which is faster and easier to use. So in all, the Luma is an okay wi-fi system that is slightly overrated. You know, it's very much like going on a speed date on Valentine's Day. You may get some fun out of it but at the same time you will not miss out on much either if you decide to Skip it. Which I do because when it comes to romance, I take it slow. And that's because I'm [UNKNOWN] and this is the Luma WiFi system. [MUSIC]
